Saturday, January 21 beginning at 9 PM - The Katonah Studio Jazz Band swings at Via Vanti! - KSJB, a musical ensemble featuring some of northern Westchester’s top players, pays respectful homage to classic jazz legends Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Stan Getz, Bill Evans and other masters of the genre. Founded in 2005, KSJB derives its name from the Katonah recording studio of Robert Kessler, a Grammy-award winning composer, audio producer and pianist. Saxophonist R.J. Marx attended Berklee College of Music and is a member of the Jazz Journalists Association. Also playing in the January 21 gig are bassist Lester Harper, alto saxophonist Emily Tabin and drummer Eric Katz. FREE!!!

Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 6:30 PM - "The Art of Pairing Italian Foods & Wine" presented by "Universita La Dolce Vita at Via Vanti!" and The Westchester Wine School. If every university were as seductive as this one, we'd all have our Ph.D. "Dean of Food & Culture" Carla Gambescia and "Wine Dean" Ned Towle of The Westchester Wine School will conduct an engaging tutorial while serving a delizioso multi-course dinner highlighting the great Italian food and wine tradition. The curriculum is designed for "all levels" and will cover six distinctive Italian wines paired with a specially created 6-course tasting menu accompanied by related "color commentary" on Italian culture. "Students" will learn and experience the fundamentals of harmonious wine and food pairing. Featured Italian wines will include a sparkling wine, two whites and three reds. The tasting menu will include piccolo gusti, a seasonal soup, salad, pasta, braised beef, and the gelato named as New York's best. "Tuition" is $68 per person excluding tax and 18% gratuity. Tuesday, August 2nd beginning at 7 PM - Bernhard Haaks Trio
Mr. Haaks is joined this evening by Melissa Aldana on saxophone and Dave Ambrosio on bass. Ms Aldana, originally from Chile, is a rising star on the international jazz circuit. Mr. Ambrosio holds degrees in classical composition and jazz performance and has performed widely. Hear straight ahead jazz to improvisations, including works of Monk, Shorter, Coleman, and others.

The first of two trios assembled by the talented Bernhard Haaks (drums) specially for this series. Harry Miller is an established NYC pianist who has toured internationally and performed and recorded with Quincy Jones. Debbie Kennedy, on bass, currently plays with the Woody Allen Jazz Band. Hear them perform work of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, and others.

Back by popular demand for the third consecutive year, the Alison Shearer Trio (Alison on sax, Cyrus Von Hochstetter on piano, and Dylan Shamat on bass) draws from all realms of the jazz repertoire for their original compositions and arrangements. Accomplished as individual performers, the trio has also appeared together at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts.

Friday, November 12th from 9 - 11:30 PM - An evening of "Jazz-aret" & Marci and Michael . . . an eclectic mix of light Jazz with a touch of Cabaret, compliments of Via Vanti! Marci Elyn Schein and Michael Ficocelli are nationally acclaimed performing artists with a number of touring and CD appearances to their credit. As a jazz vocalist Marci has perforned with The Marci Elyn Shein Quartet and an array of jazz greats including Jeremy Wall and Joel Rosenblatt (both of Spyro Gyra), and Dave Weckl (Chic Corea). As a pianist and award winning composer, Michael has had his original works performed around Europe and the US, including the West Coast premiere of From Death to Hope in Beverly Hills, CA this past April. In this performance the group will deliver the music of Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and others, in addition to compositions of its own members and free group improvisations.

Beavin Lawrence is a gifted saxophonist working throughout the Tri -State area and has just released his first CD, entitled "Infinite Possibilities". Bassist Jim Cammack is a international jazz artist and the bass player in the internationally acclaimed trio of Jazz Master with musical legend Ahmad Jamal for the last twenty seven years. Alan Eicher, a highly-in-demand pianist, has worked with jazz great Lou Donaldson and others. Bernhard Haaks, drums, has worked with internationally renowned concert pianist Ms. Julie Holtzman and others.

Tuesday August 3rd from 7-10 PM - Summer Notti di Jazz: The Bernhard Haaks Trio with special guest violin virtuoso Shiro Sadamura (compliments of Via Vanti!)

The Quartet will present a colorful palette of its own compositions and jazz standards, emphasizing the past bop era and Latin Jazz .

Violinist Shiro Sadamura has received numerous awards and has worked extensively and performed internationally with Eddie Palmieri's Latin Jazz Ensemble among others. Bernhard Haaks, drums, has worked with internationally renowned concert pianist and jazz cabaret singer Julie Holtzman. Alan Eicher, a top pianist, has worked with jazz great Lou Donaldson and others. Dan Asher on bass performs in most major New York jazz clubs.

This masterful guitarist, composer and singer/songwriter joins us again to share his own distinctive and mellow brand of Americana, rock, blues and jazz, including selections from his great Overtones (2009) CD. He will play an instrumental set during the dinner hour (7-8:30) followed by a mixed vocal/instrumental set later on (9-10).

Delve into the realm of funky organ and guitar arrangements, supported by grooving boogaloo rhythms.

A trio of exceptional musicians. Tom Halpenny is an internationally known performing guitarist who lives in both London and New York City. Tom has studied with Jazz legend Ron Carter and plays with his band Tom Halpenny Conspiracy in NYC. Assaf Glizner is an up and coming pianist , who just finished his studies at SUNY Purchase, performing with Arturo O'Farrill; and Bernhard Haaks, drums, has worked with, among others, internationally renowned concert pianist and jazz cabaret singer Ms. Julie Hotzman and with Mr. Al DeFino, guitarist with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr.

Saturday, July 17th from 9-Midnight - Blue Moon Concert...A UNIQUE EVENT

The nine-piece ensemble is exuberant, colorful and soulful, mixing Straight Ahead and Modern jazz with Classical and New Music. With rich, modern arrangements, Blue Moon offers an opulent .blistening experience, filled with exciting harmonies and passionate improvisations. Founded by Bernhard Haaks in 2009 with a vision of telling the story of modern music, Blue Moon is reaching to the roots of and merging with the musical traditions of the Old and New Worlds. Charles Elleebee, world renowned guitarist who has worked and toured with Ornett Coleman for 14 years, will be performing.

Jazz saxophonist Alison Shearer is a young star establishing herself both in Westchester and NYC. Alison recently graduated from the Manhattan School of Music where she studied with Steve Wilson, Vincent Herring, and Dick Oatts. Alison has performed at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, the 55 Bar, The Cutting Room, and Sweet Rhythms among other musical venues in New York and around the country. The other members of the trio, Cyrus Von Hochstetter on piano and Dylan Shamat on bass, are both raising stars who have studied at the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School of Music. The Alison Shearer Trio performed at the Caramoor Music Festival in October of 2009

The Katonah Studio Jazz Band was formed in 2005 by alums of the SUNY Purchase Adult Jazz Ensemble. Musically, KSJB pays respectful homage to Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Stan Getz, Bill Evans and other masters of the genre.

KSJB derives its name from the Katonah recording studio of Robert Kessler, an award-winning composer, audio producer and pianist. Drummer Jack Falco studied with jazz great Tony Williams. Saxophonist R.J. Marx attended Berklee College of Music and currently studies with Charlie Lagond and Pete Malinverni. He is also a member of the Jazz Journalists Association.

Wednesdays, June 2 & 16 - "Acoustic Cool" with Emile Menasché. The word "virtuoso" is not too strong for the musical talent of Menasché whose latest CD, overtones, has been praised both here ("a beautiful set of acoustic music...that works wonderfully with Menasché's mastery of the guitar" - John Heidt, Vintage Guitar, Dec. 2009) and abroad ("no pretentious gimmicks or effects muddying the big, beautiful tone of his three Guild guitars" Graham Hazelwood, Acoustic Magazine (U.K.), Dec. 2009). Saturday, February 6 - Jewelry Trunk Show and Cocktail Reception, showcasing the stunning jewelry designs of Janet Cucinell Orlando. "Inspired by my extensive travels in northern Italy, the 2010 collection - in 22kt gold, pink gold, and platinum silver - combines the aesthetic of Gothic architecture with the organic patterning of the natural world. I create ethereal textures by applying innovative techniques, balancing ancient inspiration with a modern sensibility. My designs often pair these meticulously carved metal structures with exquisite gemstones. It is my hope that each piece from this collection imparts a profound sense of abundance and joy to its wearer." Just in time for Valentine's Day! From 4-6 PM. (No charge!)

A Winter's Evening in the Val D'Osta   For our first Cultural Discovery Dinner of 2010, we will experience a sampling of the rustic mountain cuisine of this unique region, harmoniously paired with the rich warming wines of the adjacent Piemonte. Friday, December 18 - Notti di Jazz (Jazz Night) with the Bernhard Haaks Trio. Celebrate the music of Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Miles Davis and other jazz greats. In addition, trio members Rainer Boehm (piano), Tod Hedrick (bass) and Bernhard Haaks (percussion) will perform some of their own original music. Boehm, recipient of numerous international awards, is heralded as one of the best young jazz pianists in Germany. Hedrick, a much-in-demand musician, has performed with both jazz and classical ensembles in Manhattan and the tri-state area. Haaks has worked and performed with master guitarist Al DeFino (Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr.) and internationally renowned concert pianist and jazz caberet singer Julie Holzman. Beginning at 9 PM. Thursday, December 17 - "Acoustic Cool" with Emile Menasché. The word "virtuoso" is not too strong for the musical talent of Menasché whose latest CD, overtones, has been praised both here ("a beautiful set of acoustic music...that works wonderfully with Menasché's mastery of the guitar" - John Heidt, Vintage Guitar, Dec. 2009) and abroad ("no pretentious gimmicks or effects muddying the big, beautiful tone of his three Guild guitars" Graham Hazelwood, Acoustic Magazine (U.K.), Dec. 2009). He will play an instrumental set during the dinner hour (7-8:30) followed by a mixed vocal/instrumental set later on (9-10). From 7-10 PM. (No charge!)

Sunday, November 15 at 5 PM   Experience the Food & Wine of Le Marche. This multi-course "Cultural Discovery Dinner" with wine pairings will honor Ellie & Ed Giobbe, residents of Bedford. Ed is both a renowned artist and author of several cookbooks. His family is from Le Marche. The late abstract expressionist Robert Motherwell said that Ed was the only painter he knew who successfully combined the Italian Quattrocentro with modern art. Monday, Nov. 2   Hunter's Moon Haiku Talk - On the occasion of the Hunter's Moon (November's full moon), Via Vanti! revives the concept of the "salon", offering periodic presentations of cultural, artistic or intellectual interest. Scott Mason, a partner in our restaurant, is an international award winning haiku poet. His talk is entitled "Only Connect: A Westerner's Appreciation of Haiku". $15.00 admission includes pre-talk appetizers and, for the first 25 sign-ups, a copy of the haiku anthology "A New Resonance 6" (retail price $17) which contains a selection of Scott's work. Wednesday, Oct. 28   Face to Face with Ciclismo Classico - The recognized leader in Italian cycling vacations since 1989, Ciclismo Classico (CC) will showcase its 2010 lineup of trips in Italy and beyond.
